2018 - January

ttn logoJanuary, 2018: Welcome to my latest adventure!

Kim Schultz

Happy New Year! Reflecting back to 2017, it was a fun and exciting year! 2018 is only going to get better! New ideas, new businesses and new clients will help make this year amazing! So sit back, keep your arms and legs inside the ride at all times, and enjoy the ride!!

Kim's Excellent Adventures

Dallas Trip - This trip was a new one. I mean, not to a new place but I added this trip so I could help my friend James decorate his new house for Christmas! He goes a little over the top! Like 17 trees, animated stuff, house lights and more! Chelsea actually went with me this trip! We had a great time. I was also excited about getting to see my new friend and owner of Val's Cheesecake again! He is just an awesome guy! He also makes amazing Cheesecake! I gained weight on this visit!

Meetings- Due to the holidays, many meetings didn't happen but resumed in January!

Topeka Growth- I started attending Topeka Growth, they meet on Tuesday mornings at 9 am at 515 S Kansas Ave. There is not annual fee to join and it is a fun bunch of professionals.

ABWA KEEN - I was announced as a new member! We also had a fashion show by Findables!  This meeting is at the Capitol Plaze on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 11:30 to 1pm. This is a women's group. There is an annual fee but it is well worth the fee! There is also a fee for lunch. They always look really good but I drink my shakes!

ING Meeting - It was just way too cold for me to get out for this meeting!

Christmas: My family and my aunt Marlyn and cousin Willie joined us this year! Frank made Lasagna and we opened presents!

Family 1 Family 1 Family 1 Family 1 Family 1

It's A Wonderful Life - My friend Keith the Critic hosted a movie night at The Jayhawk Theatre. Over 200 people attended and helped raise money for The Jayhawk and The Topeka Rescue Mission.  This was actually the first time I have ever watched the entire movie from start to finish! The Jayhawk is a true gem and I hope they can find more funding to bring it back to full life!

Sip and Shop in KC -
Toni's friend Penny Glass invited us over to her house for a sip and shop event. Different booths and wine were the highlight! I don't drink wine but I did enjoy some delicious food! I am not much of a shopper but I do like meeting new people and just hanging out!

Hanger Party - I was so excited about getting the invite to the hanger party this year.  It is always the best part of the year! Robin and I once again had a great time! We might not fly in private jets but we are quite entertaining! The food was great, the drinks were plenty and fun was had!!

Girls Christmas Party - It was our 2nd annual girls Christmas party. This year we did a bbq theme and Susan hosted the party at her house! We picked names but this year we had to pick a color and our gift had to incorporate that color. I picked Susan and she picked plaid. I know, plaid is a pattern but I think I did a good job. I had my daughter sewed her an apron! It was fun!

Both were awesome but I loved the Cortez light show! We ate pizza, drank hot chocolate and watched A Year Without A Santa Clause. My time with Kolton is always special!

Let's Help Company Party - Being a non profit we do not have a line item for staff parties. This year a very nice donor treated us to a fun night on the town!  We started at Hazel Hill, then off to Topeka Civic Theatre to meet Santa, next Applemart to buy lottery tickets and dinner was a Kikus. All of these stops done in a limo!

Frankie's Graduation Party - I believe this should be her final graduation party since she just achieved her Doctorate in Education! I am so proud of her! She has worked really hard to get this far. It wasn't easy!

View from my Studio   13

Barbara Waterman-Peters

As I write this, it is barely Christmas. By the time it is read, it will be New Year’s and beyond. My studio calendar is a collection of images of beautiful silk paintings, a gift from an artist friend. I won’t mark upcoming events or circle dates on this calendar because it’s too pretty to mar. But the ones at home and in my purse are already full of penciled jottings as January beckons.

Taking a break from my figurative work and letting my crows rest, I am surrounded by canvases in my “Dark Fish” series. The underpaintings are complete; the black and white fish are waiting for the application of color.  All of the paintings are already committed to shows and other opportunities.

Such situations occur at intervals and bring with them excitement and an eagerness to get on with the process of painting. It is similar to the anticipation of the new year, counting down to 2018’s possibilities!

STUDIO 831 will not be open for First Friday in January.

Watch for a wonderful exhibit by Hi Stockwell in February!

The Post

The Post Movie 1This film is based on the true story from the 1970's in which the Washington Post is facing a dilemma.  The New York Times has published classified reports showing that the U.S., in particular Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, knew that the Viet Nam War was going badly.  When the Post receives the same information, Editor-in-Chief Ben Bradlee, who is played by Tom Hanks, works throught the evening with the other journalists to prepare the story.  Katherine Graham, who owns the paper and is played by Meryl Streep, must decide whether to publish or not knowing that it may result in criminal charges and the end of her newspaper.

Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, and Director Steven Spielberg made a good but not great film.   I thought the script was OK but again not great.  Steven Spielberg did a good job directing.  The set was OK and the acting was superb by Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.  Meryl Streep received a Golden Globe nomination, and probably will receive an Oscar nomination, but for some reason Tom Hanks did not.  Overall the movie is worth seeing as it tells some truth's about what went on during the Viet Nam War by the U.S. government.  I gave it 3 1/2 out of 4 stars.  3 and half stars

All the Money in the World

This movie is about the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III, who was the grandson of the richest man in the world during the 1970's.  J. Paul Getty, who was played by Christopher Plummer, refuses to pay a ransom to the men who All the Money in the Worldkidnapped his grandson.

Getty's son succumbs to pressure by becoming a drug addict and he and wife Gail, who is played by Michelle Williams, divorce.  Gail refuses any money in exchange for full custody of their children.  So when a ransom of $17 million is demanded, she cannot pay.  Gail turns to her ex-father-in-law who refuses to help.  Instead he assigns his head of security, Fletcher Chase, to help with negotiations.  Chase, who is played by Mark Wahlberg, is able to reduce the ransom to $4 million.  In the meantime, Getty III, who is played by Charlie Plummer, has been sold to the Italian mob.

Christopher Plummer should be nominated for a best actor nomination.  He was outstanding, especially considering he had about one month to film after the Kevin Spacey debacle.  Director Ridley Scott, who should also be nominated, did the right thing by replacing Spacey with Plummer.

The sets were perfect and as you would expect the directing was superb.  Michelle Williams and Mark Wahlberg also deserve nods towards supporing actress/actor awards.  I loved this movie and gave it 4 out of 4 stars.  It should also get a best picture nomination. Four out of Four Stars

CocoThis animated movie follows young Miguel Rivera, voiced by Anthony Gonzalez, who wants to be a musician.  The only problem is that his family does not allow music of any kind in their household.  Long ago Miguels's great great grandmother's husband left her for a career in music.  After this she opened a shoemaking business to care for herself and daughter Coco.  Music was to be forever banned.

On the Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday, Miguel plans to secretly enter a talent show.  He enters the mausoleum of famed musician Ernesto to borrow his guitar.  On this day, families display pictures of the members of their family who have died allowing them to visit the Land of the Living for this one day of the year.  Inside the mausoleum Miguel becomes invisible to the living and can only be seen by the dead.  After discovering that he has been cursed for his thievery, he is taken to the Land of the Dead where he must receive a blessing from his family in order to lift the curse and return home.  However, he must do it before sundown.

I enjoyed Coco which won a Golden Globe for best animated movie.  The animation was fantastic as was the story.  Other voiced roles were done by Benjamin Bratt and Gael Garcia Bernal who were tremendous.  I highly recommend that you take your whole family including the older members to this movie.  I gave it 3 1/2 out of 4 stars. 3 and half stars

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri

This award winning movie stars Frances McDormand as Mildred, a mother who is fed up with the efforts of the local law enforcement in Ebbing, Missouri.  Mildred's daughter was murdered seven months ago and little progress has been made to find the killer.  Mildred decides to rent three billboards to keep the case alive while criticizing Sheriff Willoughby, who is played by Woody Harrelson.  The billboards read "Raped While Dying", "And Still no Arrests", followed by "How Come, Chief Willoughby".  This upsets the locals including officer Jason Dixon, who is played by Sam Rockwell.  Dixon and the town folks snub Mildred any chance they can while Willoughby tries to reason with her even though he is dying from cancer.  But Mildred is not to be deterred.

This is one of the best films I saw in 2017 as evidenced by its Golden Globe wins as best drama, best actress in Frances McDormand, best supporting actor in Sam Rockwell, and best screen play.  This movie was extremely well acted, directed, and written.  It was filmed in a little over 30 days which is a huge tribute to this.  Every person involved in this movie did a fantastic job.  It's still playing at the theatre but it's not a blockbuster like Star Wars, so it may not last much longer.  Go see it. It's well worth the price of admission.  I gave this movie 4 out of 4 stars. Four out of Four Stars

Star Wars:  The Last Jedi

sw the last jedi tall BThis Star Wars installment takes up where The Force Awakens left off in 2015.  The Resistance continues to fight against the First Order.  Princess Leia, played by Carrie Fisher, is evacuating as Poe Dameron, played by Oscar Isaac, fights off the First Order.  Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver, has an opportunity to destroy Leia's ship, but cannot do so knowing that his mother is aboard.  Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, continues to seek out Luke Skywalker, again played by Mark Hamill.  As the last Jedi, the Resistance needs his help.

Luke resists joining the fight but agrees to train Rey in the use of the force.  Rey finds that she is able to communicate with Kylo Ren through telepathy.  How long can the Resistance continue to hold off the First Order?

This movie was better than Rogue One that came out in 2016.  The directing by Rian Johnson was excellent, the script (also by Rian Johnson) was fantastic, as was the looks of the set and the music.  And you can't leave out the great special effects always found in a Star Wars movie.  I rewatched the first movie and special effects have come a long way.  All the last characters made an appearance including the late great Carrie Fisher, John Boyega as Finn, Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, and Adam Driver.  All performed fantastically.

This movie gets 4 out of 4 stars.  Stay for the tribute to Carrie Fisher at the end.  She will be deeply missed.  Four out of Four Stars

Darkest Hour

Darkest Hour

This movie is about Winston Churchill during his time in office in World War II.  The British Parliament were unhappy with the work of Neville Chamberlain and forced his resignation.  In his place comes Winston Churchill who is played by Gary Oldman.  Churchill has his quirks as his new secretary, Elizabeth Layton (Lily James) soon learns.  She is brought to tears on her first day causing Churchill's wife, Clementine (Kristin Scott Thomas) to chastise him.

Churchill's refusal to negotiate with Germany frustrates the members of his War Cabinet and they plan to resign.  Churchill must decide whether to stick with his instincts and fight or follow the wishes of his cabinet and work with the Germans.

I enjoyed this movie and especially the performance of Gary Oldman.  He has great career work which should help him win an Oscar for his role in Darkest Hour.  Lily James was an excellent supporting actress.  The movie was good but not great.  Historians will find it entertaining as I did but the story is not new.  I gave this movie 3 out of 4 stars.  Even though I do believe Gary Oldman will be nominated, he will not win.  3 and half stars

Jumanji:  Welcome to the Jungle

jumanji welcome jungle movie review 1

Welcome back Jumanji.  This is the second move in the series that originally starred Robin Williams.  In this movie, four teenagers are serving high school detention.  They are required to help clean out the school's basement when they find the Jumanji game and as in the original movie are plunked into the game in the middle of the jungle.   Spencer, the smart one, becomes tough guy Dr. Smolder Bravestone, and is played by Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson.  "Fridge" who is a football player becomes a short zoologist named Franklin "Mouse" Finbar and is played by Kevin Hart.  Martha who refuses to participate in gym class becomes sexy martial art expert , Ruby Roundhouse, and is played by Karen Gillan.  Bethany who is pretty, popular, and glued to her phone becomes portly Professor Sheldon Oberon and is played by Jack Black.  The four must figure out how to return home and soon realize that they each have only three lives to do so.

After figuring out some of the clues, they meet up with Jefferson McDonough.  Jefferson who is played by Nick Jonas, has been in the game for a long time but is afraid to continue because he is down to his last life.  The newcomers to the game need his help so must convince him to risk his last life.

I very much enjoyed this Jumanji.  It was very entertaining.  The acting was good, the script was well written, and the special effects were fabulous.  It was shot in Hawaii so the scenery was beautiful.  The Rock, Jack Black, Nick Jonas, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan were an all star cast and didn't disappoint.  I gave this movie 3 out of 4 stars. 3 and half stars

Proud Mary

Proud Mary

Taraji P. Henson stars in this movie as Mary, who is a hitwoman.  After successfully completing a job, she unhappily discovers that she has now orphaned a young boy named Danny.  She follows his life and when she learns he is being mistreated by the mob he his drug running for, she kills the top dog and brings Danny home with her.  She immediately realizes her mistake when that group blames her boss, Benny, who is played by Danny Glover.  She must keep the history of Danny, played by Jahi Di'Allo Winston, a secret.  But when Benny's son, Tom, who is played by Billy Brown, discovers the truth, Mary is forced to defend herself and Danny.

This movie is a check your mind at the door movie.  Taraji P. Henson is bad-ass in her role.  The action is really good and the sets are very well designed.  However the script could have been better.  This movie is somewhat short but any longer would have been bad.  Just go into this ready to enjoy Taraji P. Henson kicking ass.  I give it 3 out of 4 stars. 3 and half stars

Robin and her husband, Graham, have been blissfully married since August of 2009.  In 2013, they successfully brought a tiny human into the world. He has been terrorizing the family chihuahua, Joplin, and changing Robin & Graham's view of "the world" ever since.

Anthony CayAnthony Cay

Owner: Total Fitness Body Zone

Organized Chaos VS Fitness Confusion

I’d like to say I fell into this business, but the reality is this business called me.
I worked at a local gym here in town as a personal trainer in 2011.
I really enjoyed the training aspect of my job and working with people. I just didn’t appreciate how the company mistreated their clients. The lack of listening of clients need and wants. I chose to provide a service that clientele would be able to benefit from physically and still be economically feasible. In August of 2011 Total Fitness Body was born.
The purpose of this company is to promote healthy lifestyles and provide fitness training and nutritional education to all age groups and all fitness levels including beginner, advanced, and or professional. Our focus is on safety first and always. Provide first class training and face to face customer service, the attention to these details have set this company apart from all the rest.

I am a current Sergeant and Combat Medic in the United States Army. I have been an EMT for 11 years and a Certified Personal trainer for 6yrs. I have played all physical sports and have received advanced training in all of them. Some of the sports would include football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, tennis, softball, track wrestling and Jiu-jitsu just to name a few.

So while I will definitely kick your butt with a great workout, I will always keep your safety as my number one priority.
Weight loss and strength conditioning
Post rehab transitional therapy

Keith Vansickle

Keith Van Sickle

Keith the Critic

I began my career as a film critic nearly 25 years ago, inspired by my first viewing of Star Wars in 1977 at the old Sunset Drive in Lawrence, KS. I continue to wonder how Annie Hall beat Star Wars for best picture that year and demand a re-count!

I got into radio by giving reviews on WIBW radio in Topeka. Later came here to Country Legends 106.9 as not only a film critic, but also Promotions Director and the Morning Show Producer.

Joining forces with Randy Guzman, we created the television show “The Aisle Seat”. The show was very successful and aired on KTWU. We not only discussed movies but also local entertainment and held celebrity interviews. Some of the biggest names I got to interview were: Tom Cruise, Billy Bob Thorton, Will Farrell, and Dakota Fanning.

I’m a certified Batman fanatic, die-hard Chicago Cubs fan, and a true blue KU Jayhawk supporter! In 2005 I started creating the “Slash & Bash Horror/Sci-Fi Film Festival” with movie screenings and special guest appearances.

I suffered a series of strokes in February 2010 and a lingering viral infection that landed me in the hospital and several weeks in intensive care, almost costing me my life. After months of recovery at Kansas Rehabilitation Hospital, I regained my ability to speak and write.

West Post

I heard on Saturday of the passing of Adam West. His Batman has been my favorite character all of my life. I got to interview him for Country Legends 106.9 and it was one of the highlights of my career. It was a pleasure and he was kind, down to Earth, and an unequaled family man. He knew of the impact of his work on society and never let his fans down. He will be sorely missed. Thanks Adam for all of the pleasure you have brought to the world.

I will add my stars to the page, as I meet with them! Check back to see who will be helping make this newsletter come alive!

This website is a prototype for an idea that I have been working on for ten years! It is continually changing and I hope to make this the main site for anyone that wants to find something in Topeka to use.

It is being built with those who live in Topeka and the surrounding area but not limited to them.

There are 4 sections to this website.

  1. The Topeka Newsletter is the first part.  It is going through some major overhaul since most of the information can now be found in a better organized manner on the website.  This is free for any locally owned business to use to promote their business.
  2. The Community Calendar is actually the most important part of this website, right now.  Each community should be informed on what is going on. This doesn't just mean the bar scene. When I say informed, I mean fundraisers, sports, daily food and drink specials, sales, entertainment, recreation and anything else going on.  This calendar tries to include anything that the public is invited to. There is no charge to include your events.  We enter all the events so it saves business owners time. They just need to send us the information and we will take it from there.
  3. Everything Topeka is a plethora of information compiled in a map based program.  Here you can search and find different venues in different categories. You can pick one or all categories to search. This search will not find information that is not on the map though so you will need to use the website search function also. It is free to be listed with a simple profile and an affordable way to enhance your listing.
  4. Everything Else is more businesses that are not listed in the Map feature. There is a guide page that actually will lead you in the right direction.  It is free to be listed with a simple profile and an affordable way to enhance your listing.

We have 2 different search bars.  We use a program called Hot Spot and it does not integrate with the rest of the website at this time.  So you will need to use both places if you can't find what you are looking for.  Search Articles option will search everything but the maps. It even includes the calendar.
