2018 - Oct

ttn logoOctober, 2018: Welcome to my latest adventure!

Kim Schultz

Yep, it is once again Kimtober! I am sad to say good bye to sumemr but this summer was weird! I didn't get to do much summer stuff! Being internet superstars requires a lot of work! So, I have to accept that summer will be here before I know it! Welcome to Fall!!

Drive In Movie Maniacs

Logo 1đź’€Drive-In movie Maniacs will begin nationwide syndication on RetroTV, ActionTV and The Family Channel this October, covering more than 60 million households. Host Terrible Tim is bringing classic horror TV back from the dead and turning the world of horror hosting on its severed head, all across the USA!

Beginning in 2013, Drive-In Movie Maniacs has blended a reality show flare with hint of nostalgia. Both dark and enlightening, it features classic horror films, original music by The Haunted Creepys, celebrity guests and nationally known recording artists each week.

Crematia Mortem, host of KSHB-41’s “Creature Feature” from 1981-1988, proclaimed in 2014 that “Drive-In Movie Maniacs now held the keys to Creepytown” as she officially passed the Kansas City horror host torch to Terrible Tim. “Terrible Tim is absolutely terrorific and creeps it real” as Kansas City’s first horror host in 25 yrs.

Drive-In Movie Maniacs has become an underground hit with a cult following among its maniacal fans. The show’s audience has grown rapidly since 2013, when it began with five stations broadcasting the weekly episodes. In 2015 Drive-In Movie Maniacs expanded into New York and other markets.

The show is also popular on Facebook as a weekly live “scream” event, where fans can interact with the show’s creators and stars to riff along with the movie and Terrible Tim’s antics.

See you on the dark side. đź’€

Kim's Excellent Adventures!

I actually live in Topeka, I never say, there is nothing to do or I am bored. I miss out on so much stuff!

First Annual Gablocal Telethons -  Our childhood was spent raising money for the MDA Jerry Lewis Telethon! Our memories are square dancing, White Lakes Mall and carrying around the cowboy boot! This year we decided to bring back a Labor Day parade! We had a great time!

Touch a Truck -  I made it downtown for this event! It has grown since our very first one! This event was started when we started construction on Kansas Ave. It is now a very fun event for kids to get to see all the big trucks up close!

Drive In Movie Maniacs -  As you can tell, my family is very into technology and television stuff! It was very exciting to finally meet the Writer/Host plus other stuff for Drive In Movie Manics. This show is produced in Kansas City with the help of our friend at TV25! I am not a horror fan, but this show uses the old movies and add some comedy skits in between!

Dog sitting in Topeka  - I spent a week with Daisy and Scooter! I also spent a week in their pool! I had not had enough summer and was not looking forward to Fall! This summer was so busy and my pool time was limited! After this week, I was able to accept that Fall was here!!

My uncle passed away - My uncle Jerry has been battling Parkinson's for years! His health recently was deteriorating quickly. I don't want to say he lost his battle, I would rather say he decided he was done and was ready to pass! My cousins and Aunt Terry said he passed very peacefully. I drove to Newton with my mom and daughter Friday night for the Rosary. We spent some time with my Aunt Terry. Saturday was the funeral and lunch with the family. Funerals are also sad but being around family, helps make it hurt a little less!

Talk About Topeka LIVE Returns to TPAC -  I was in Atlanta so Andrea and Robin helped out!

View from my Studio    22

Barbara Waterman-Peters

September flies by, dropping autumn into our midst. Subtle changes like colors and new ideas, plans, and energy come with the fall. Leaves begin their annual descent.

In my studio, I work on a final painting started in the summer months. Its completion will mark my turn to fresh canvases.

NOTO is at work on new things, too. Stunning murals, new galleries and exhibits, unique banners and ever-changing displays at shops reinvent its ambience constantly. An upcoming statewide Arts conference hosted by NOTO is in its planning stages.

Being a creative in such an environment is ideal and a constant source of inspiration. On the other hand, such stimulation raises the bar and leaves no room for descent into mediocrity.

“Clay & Paint: Bradley, Peters, & BW-P”

Two ceramic artists and one painter will show works that address different ways to approach the surface of an object. Opening First Friday October 5 from 4:00-8:30 PM, the show will run through November in conjunction with the Kansas Artist Craftsman Association Conference November 16-17.

 Kansas Youth Chorale

Kansas Youth Chorale

The Kansas Youth Chorale (KYC) was founded in 2009. Our first auditions were held the summer of 2010 with the purpose of expanding the experiences of young singers in musical excellence and to be united in the common goal of bringing joy to others through music.

Since the foundings, the children of KYC have had the pleasure of singing with the with the Topeka Festival Singers and Ballet Midwest's 35th Anniversary of "The Nutcracker", at the Kansas Book Fair, PEO Founder's Day and the Stormont Vail Volunteer Luncheon. We were honored to be selected to sing at the 2013 Kansas Music Educators Conference in Wichita. During the 2015/2016 season, the choir sang with the Topeka Symphony and in the first annual Children's Choir Festival/Benefit Concert. Children's choirs from several Kansas cities participated.

Pinned

Pinned

It all started with a friend's social media post! After seeing her good friend do a space-saving project for make-up, Pinned's owner was excited to create it herself! She then realized how much sourcing and time it would take to duplicate the project. The frustration she found made her wonder, why isn't there a place I can go that has everything I need to complete these projects!?And with that - Pinned was born!

Photography is about reflecting who you are, at your best. You want to share what's important to you with the whole world, and I can make that happen. The photos you'll treasure your whole life aren't the unnatural poses with faces pointed at the camera. When you look through your memories years later, what you want is something that will bring you right back to how you felt that day. Your fingers brushing across your new husband's face as you gaze up at him, the fire in your eyes the day before your big game, the look that charmed everyone, and the spark that just lights up the room. That's what you need to capture, and for that, you need a photographer that doesn't see you as just another shoot.

Mama MiaMama Mia:  Here We Go Again

This movie has been widely anticipated since the announcement of a Momma Mia sequel.  It's been five years since Meryl Streep played spunky Donna Sheridan whose youthful exuberance found her pregnant by one of three possible men.  Now Donna has passed on and her daughter, Sophie, again played by Amanda Seyfried, is 25 and determined to make her mother's hotel a success with a grand reopening.  To Sophie's dismay, her now husband, Sky, played by Dominic Cooper, chooses to stay in New York where his career is beginning to bloom.  In addition, her dads, Harry and Bill (Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard) cannot make it either.  She will, however, have the support of dad, Sam (Pierce Brosnan), and her mom's friends, Tanya and Julie (Christine Baranski and Rosie Mulligan).

The movie is interspersed with the tale of a young Donna, played by Lily James, and how she met the three men who could now be Sophie's dad.  At times you are seeing current times, and at others the past.

I enjoyed this Momma Mia sequel.  I thought it was just as good as the original and possibly better.  The songs and dancing were fabulous.  I've heard that some people didn't think the songs were that good, but as a child of the 70's and 80's, I loved Abba and loved the song selection in the movie.  Cher played the part of Donna's mother and sang the Abba classic, "Fernando", to my delight.  Lily James, Amanda Seyfirend, and Meryl Streep all were fantastic and have great voices as well.  As expected, the acting by all three was superb as was that of the rest of the cast, including Cher and Andy Garcia.

I loved this movie so much that I've found myself whistling the tunes.  It's a fun family movie and well worth the price of admission.  I gave it 4 out of 4 stars.  Go see this movie. Four out of Four Stars

The First Purge

The First Purge

This is a prequel to the three previous Purge movies.  The New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) believe that the United States problems are broadly caused by the poor and that the country can no longer afford them.  An experiment is to be conducted on Staten Island where for one night crime is legal, including murder.  The NFFA plans to pay each willing participant $5000.  In exchange, they must wear contact lenses equipped with cameras and allow a tracking device to be implanted.

Nya is a young black woman played by Lex Scott Davis who lives in a rundown apartment building on Staten Island.  She vehemently works to stop the Purge from occurring while trying to protect her younger brother, Isaiah, from the streets of New York.  Isaiah wants a better life and starts selling drugs.  He is attacked by Skeletor (Rotimi Paul) who is a drug addict infatuated with Nya.  He slashes Isaiah on the neck.  When Nya finds out, she confronts local drug king, Dmitri (Y'lan Noel) who is her ex-boyfriend.  Neither Dmitri or Nya plan to participate in the Purge, but Skeletor does.  Nya and Dmitri must find a way to stay safe.

I don't care for any of the Purge movies but of all of them, this was the best.  Y'lan Noel and Lex Scott Davis were great in their roles.  The storyline is better and the makeup on Skeletor was outstanding giving him the crazed look that was needed for the part.

There are many Purge fans, so I will always try to keep an open mind.  The 1st movie was OK, but the following movies, not so much.  This one is a slight improvement but I can't agree with the fact that they are making this a TV series.   However, I will give it a shot.  The previous movies only received a 2 out of 4 rating from me, but I'll raise this one a bit to 2 1/2 out of 4 stars due to slightly better writing. 2 1 2 out of 4 stars

Hotel TransylvaniaHotel Transylvania 3:  Summer Vacation

This third installment of the Hotel Transylvania animated movies again has Adam Sandler voicing the lead role of Count Dracula.  His daughter, Mavis, who is voiced by Selena Gomez, plans a vacation for the family on a cruise.  Drac falls in love with Ericka, who is the captain of the ship (voiced by Kathryn Hahn).  But Ericka is the great-granddaughter of Professor Abraham Van Helsing, voiced by Jim Gaffigan.  Van Helsing has plans to rid the world of monsters with his great-granddaughter's assistance.

I loved the previous two Hotel Transylvania films.  I'm an Adam Sandler fan as well so I couldn't wait to see this movie.  However, I was disappointed. The other characters' voice parts included that of Kevin James, David Spade, Fran Drescher, Mel Brooks, and Steve Buscemi.  They were all great but overall this movie was lacking.  Parts of the movie were very funny, but there were periods of time when not much happened.  The script needed to be less predictable and more entertaining, but the kids will love it.

As I said, lower your expectations, and you'll be OK, especially if you take a little one.  I gave it only 2 1/2 out of 4 stars. 2 1 2 out of 4 stars

Skyscraper

Skyscraper

After a three month hiatus from the silver screen, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson returns in “Skyscraper.” Written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, “Skyscraper” is centered on Will Sawyer, played by Johnson, as a U.S. war veteran and former leader of the FBI Hostage Rescue Team. After losing one of his legs during his last mission with the FBI, Sawyer now finds himself assessing security for skyscrapers. His newest assignment takes him and his family to Hong Kong, where he is to inspect the security of “The Pearl,” the worlds tallest building. At 3,500 feet tall, “The Pearl” offers residents the experience of dining, working and living in a state-of-the-art skyscraper. But when an international terrorist group takes his family hostage and frames him for the fire they caused in the building, Sawyer is left with no choice but to fight through “The Pearl” to save his family and name.

Unfortunately, Thurber’s script and direction fails to provide the film’s talented cast with serviceable material. You would think it’d be easy—all the elements of a summer blockbuster are there. You have a bankable star in Johnson, a true talent in Neve Campbell, and the world’s tallest building on fire. But still, Thurber finds a way to disappoint. That is, until the film’s final act, which featured little dialogue and a whole lot of action. The journey to that point, however, is hardly worth the time or money in the theater. Overall, “Skyscraper” is yet another film with a solid cast and a hole-ridden script. 1 1/2 out of 4 stars.  One half star

Using EverythingTopeka.com

This website is a prototype for an idea that I have been working on for ten years! It is continually changing and I hope to make this the main site for anyone that wants to find something in Topeka to use.

It is being built with those who live in Topeka and the surrounding area but not limited to them.

There are 4 sections to this website.

  1. The Topeka Newsletter is the first part.  It is going through some major overhaul since most of the information can now be found in a better organized manner on the website.  This is free for any locally owned business to use to promote their business.
  2. The Community Calendar is actually the most important part of this website, right now.  Each community should be informed on what is going on. This doesn't just mean the bar scene. When I say informed, I mean fundraisers, sports, daily food and drink specials, sales, entertainment, recreation and anything else going on.  This calendar tries to include anything that the public is invited to. There is no charge to include your events.  We enter all the events so it saves business owners time. They just need to send us the information and we will take it from there.
  3. Everything Topeka is a plethora of information compiled in a map based program.  Here you can search and find different venues in different categories. You can pick one or all categories to search. This search will not find information that is not on the map though so you will need to use the website search function also. It is free to be listed with a simple profile and an affordable way to enhance your listing.
  4. Everything Else is more businesses that are not listed in the Map feature. There is a guide page that actually will lead you in the right direction.  http://everythingtopeka.com/everything-topeka/all-categories  It is free to be listed with a simple profile and an affordable way to enhance your listing.

Searching EverythingTopeka.com

We have 2 different search bars.  We use a program called Hot Spot and it does not integrate with the rest of the website at this time.  So you will need to use both places if you can't find what you are looking for.  Search Articles option will search everything but the maps. It even includes the calendar.
